To make chicken shawarma at home, you will need the following ingredients:
For the marinade:
- 1/4 cup yogurt
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the chicken:
- 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 red onion, thinly sliced
- 4 pita breads
- Lettuce, tomatoes, and any other desired toppings
Instructions:
In a small bowl, whisk together the yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, salt, and pepper to make the marinade.
Place the chicken breasts in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, turning to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 24 hours.
Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan to medium-high heat.
Remove the chicken from the marinade and discard the remaining marinade. Grill the chicken for 5-7 minutes on each side, or until cooked through.
Thinly slice the chicken and set it aside.
Grill the pita breads for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until lightly toasted.
To assemble the shawarma, place a few slices of chicken, red onion, lettuce, and tomato (or any other desired toppings) on each pita bread. Roll the pita bread up tightly and serve.
Enjoy your homemade chicken shawarma!
